Renault brings back the rally legend with its Renault 5 Turbo 3E

Of all the dominant and iconic rally cars of the past year, the Renault 5 Turbo stands out, at least to me, the most for its eccentricity. I mean, who would have thought they’d put a mighty, fire-breathing monster of an engine into a car so small, and so midship arrangement, no less! It’s been a long time since the Renault 5 Turbo has been out of production, let alone the Clio V6, as its spiritual successor. But fortunately, Renault has not forgotten the fun side of its history, as it has now brought back the R5 Turbo, but with a new twist! The new Renault 5 Turbo 3E gives the classic Turbo and Turbo 2 models from the 1980s an all-electric makeover for the modern age.

Sure, you might find that a bit worrying, but if electric cars are the way forward, I’d be more than happy to drive something exciting like this. The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is built on top of the production-spec Renault 5 all-electric city car, and interestingly, it’s not even a concept car either. In fact, it will go into production sometime soon and will arrive in a showroom near you, and you may actually be able to drive one not too far in the future. It also retains the rear-wheel-drive layout of the original Renault 5 Turbo, which debuted in 1978. So, even as an electric car, the Turbo 3E carries very much the unbridled ‘pocket rocket’ driving experience.

A new pocket rocket for the next generation

Renault is certainly not messing around reviving the iconic Turbo nameplate, with plenty of electrified power hidden within the Turbo 3E, ready to be unleashed. Specifically, you’ll get more than 500 horsepower — an insane number for such a small car — thanks to dual electric motors, one for each rear wheel. I could Perhaps we expect this revival of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E Being just a small handful they can be managed once you give them the beans. If you think that’s not enough, it can easily rival supercars and sports cars too, with impressive 0-62mph acceleration in just 3.5 seconds, keeping true to the spirit of the original R5 Turbo.

Unfortunately, we can only speculate on how it will feel while driving, but I hope it maintains the authentic feel of the 1980s Renault 5 Turbo, with the exhilarating rear-wheel-drive action you’re so keen to experience. I kill you! Unlike those old turbos, however, The new Renault 5 Turbo 3E comes with Some up-to-date engineering knowledge too. Notably, it will feature a lightweight and fairly strong carbon fiber superstructure, ensuring maximum agility and handling. The only thing you miss, which is a bit unfortunate, is the turbocharger roar of the original R5 Turbo. Since the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is completely electric, you’ll have to get used to the sound of silence.

Renault 5 Turbo revived with an electric heart

If you look around at the upcoming Renault 5 Turbo 3E, you might notice some nods and touches reminiscent of the OG R5 Turbo. For example, you may have noticed the electric car charging socket in one of the rear air inlets, which makes practical use of the classic design element. And we also have to talk about that absolutely gorgeous paint, which takes some inspiration from the historic rally and motorsport colors that once adorned the original Renault 5 Turbo. It’s a big deal for the company too, as the future Renault 5 Turbo 3E is meant to signal a major revival not just of its performance cars, but to drive the brand forward as a whole.

This forms part of Renault’s turnaround plan, which has saved it more than once since the 2020s. Naturally, electrification is a key part of this strategy, and we’ve seen some popular electric car models from Renault in the past few years as a result. This includes not only the Renault 5, on which the Turbo 3E is based, but also the equally impressive and futuristic Renault 4. For now, that’s all we know about the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, with more details and announcements scheduled for 2025. As for me, I’m watching with bated breath, as this could be one of the most exciting electric cars ever revealed. Recently.
